The Inaugural Big Bottle of Wine Party in Cape Town Roundup
Marine Inspirations, the organisers and instigators of the BBWP, worked in conjunction with the General Botha Old Boys Bursary Fund to raise money to buy a 26 foot sailing boat to donate to Lawhill Maritime centre. We are all proud and happy with the outcome and Lawhill now has their very own sail boat which will be berthed near the school at the False Bay Yacht Club in Simonstown. The boat is to be used for hands on training with practical experience on the water and is an invaluable and much needed addition to the Centre.
Preliminary calculations (subject to final audit ) indicate we took in an amazing R230,000 in total which is truly fantastic. Expenses are close to R60,000 which means that we have a net to the charity of R170,000!
A big part of the success is the donation by Maria Caimari in Mallorca who paid outright for the boat in honour of her husband who passed away in July. The boat is now named “Homero” in his remembrance. Thank you Maria, and also big thanks to Neil Coetzee who donated 2 huge bottles of wine (the first one was undrinkable so we had to think again) and of course much gratitude to Suzanne who opened up her amazing house to us.
We have learnt a lot of lessons and the next BBWP promises to be even bigger and better. We had 103 people confirmed on our list but on the night the caterer estimated that he only fed 85 and some guests reckoned there were only somewhere between 70 and 80 present. We will make sure we do not waste money like this next time and also organise the raffle and auction better. If anyone has any suggestions or would like to think about things to donate for 2017 BBWP then we would be very happy to hear from you.
Thanks again to everyone involved -. the helpers, Lawhill, GB BF committee members and of course all the people that came to the party to help us drink the Big Bottle of Wine and spend some money.
See you next year?
