DAY 4 REPORT. Monday 25th September. 2023

By the end of the day we still had no news about the lost luggage which is stuck in Madrid. Trying to deal with TAAG Angolan Airlines is frustrating and the boys needed some more clothing.

It is strange that we could not buy shorts as it is the end of summer and all the stores are only selling long trousers here in Spain.  We were very lucky that our first visit of the day was to Wave Uniforms where Garth Law spent time with the boys to give them an insight into his business of making sure super yacht crew are well dressed. Garth heard about the luggage problem so he then donated shorts to the boys and problem solved! Thank you Wave and an interesting visit.

Also a big thank you to Nathalie and Andrew at Berthon, as well as Nick von Holstein at MSOS for taking time out of their busy schedules to show the boys what they do. See below.

We have not posted any photos here on visit to Berthon as they have done a great job on Face Book – have a look at https://www.facebook.com/berthonspain Great report!!

I now hand over to Sima for their first hand report of the day’s activities. Cheers – Phil

From Sima for their take on Day 4:

“We started our morning with a visit to the offices of “Wave” uniforms . We were met by Mr Garth and he showed us around and explained to us the different types of clothes for different occupations on a super yacht, the material of they use and to the production of the clothing and told us everything in great detail. The highlight of the tour was when we saw how the yacht’s name and logos are embroidered on the clothing, all done by computer-controlled machines which was quite fascinating to see.

After the tour at Wave we headed off to the Berthon Spain service team, a company doing repairs and maintenance and it is one of the few Berthon offices around Europe. We met the employees and they took us on a tour on one of the boats under auction and the boat was beautiful ! We met the mechanical engineer and he told us how they fix these engines. Surprisingly the head technician of the company was a former chief engineer of the sailing boat Anemos which is the boat we visited in Day 3.

After that visit we had an interesting lunch at a restaurant called WOK where there is a huge array of food presented buffet style for a fixed price, all you can eat. Quite amazing and some very exotic food, even sushi and snails which we tried.

We then set off to MSOS where Capt Nick showed and told us about the medical kits that are needed by law for commercially owned boats as well as yachts. He told us how these medical kits come in different sizes which was interesting. Captain Nick also mentioned the advantages of having a medical course under your belt, especially for working on a yacht. At the end the visit Capt. Nick shared a story of how he saved a man on the beach which was interesting because he was the only person around who could’ve helped him.

Above all we continue to thank all the people that made these opportunities possible.

Day 3: 24 September —- From ~N.Lebengu
After a delicious breakfast we took off and headed to a Marina where we had the opportunity to be given a tour on the prestigious “ANEMOS” which is a 34.34m Sail Yacht, built in Finland by Nautor Swan and delivered in 1999. She is one of only 5 112 models. Fun fact about the boat is that it’s ex chef is now working on ‘Sargitta’ the boat we visited the day before.
On board “Anemos” we learnt from Captain Steve Ohlsen about the importance of teamwork in the workplace, as well as having OOMPH and determination for your job.
We were also given a task to challenge our fears by going up the 30m mast, which allowed us to see the beautiful view of Palma.

After that we headed down to Mr Rob van Wieringen’s Beneteau First 36.7 sailing boat and went for a sail along the coastline in Palma Bay where we saw the small openings (notches) in the walls that looked like caves. The weather was perfect and water out there was beautiful.

We then had a chance to helm as he explained how his setup is quite unique. Although the weather was fairly calm when we left the marina in Can Pastilla, the breeze did kick in later and we managed to the hoist the sails and we were traveling at about 4/5 knots slowly increasing until we maxed out to 7 kts. It was great to be in a scenario which we are familiar with but in a different environment. The water looked amazing, even better with the sun shining on it.

We were invited for a braai (they call it a barbeque here) at one of Marine Inspirations supporters, Linus Gerdemann, who was a professional cyclist until he retired a few years ago and now does property development here in Mallorca. He has a lovely family and lives in a traditional old house in the centre of the island where he cooked some amazing steaks for us. It was a privilege to be invited into someone’s family home, especially by someone so famous.

We all slept very well after a long day

Students Trip Sept 23 – Day 2

This is Phil doing the report today and what a day it was! Everything seemed to go wrong and very frustrating. The boys had their luggage only checked in as far as Madrid and as it was a  separate airline which brought them from Madrid to Palma their luggage did not get transferred. It might still be going round and round on the carousel in Madrid for all we know. TAAG was the airline from Cape Town to Madrid but being Angolan nothing much happens and we spent most of the morning trying to get some sense out of people with no success.

Just before lunch I took them down to STP shipyard where there are dozens of super yachts of all shapes and sizes which are in for repairs and maintenance.

We had lost a lot of time chasing the luggage so did not spend nearly enough time in the shipyard as planned, which was unfortunate. I handed them over to our good friend and supporter Maria Caimari (The Caimari Family donated the sail boat “Homero” to Lawhill back in 2018) who very kindly gave them a tour of the old town, ending up in Olivar Market which is quite an amazing place, especially the fish section.

After lunch at the market, we visited Captain Mike Kopman on “Sagitta” who showed them around and gave them a talk which was taken in enthusiastically by the young aspiring mariners from Cape Town.

S.Y “Sagitta” is a 46 meter, high performance sailing yacht built by Vitters Shipyard in 2013 so an interesting tour for the lads – Thank you Mike!

We hosted a “meet the boys” cocktail party on our roof terrace in the evening which went very well, more that we can say about the rugby which we all watch in our lounge. Such is life and tomorrow I another day!

Palma Blog D1: 22 September
We took off from Cape Town on time at 15.30 yesterday (21st) and arrived safely in Palma at lunchtime on Friday, but unfortunately our bags didn’t. After trying to find our bags and then reporting them missing we came out and finally met Capt Phil an hour later. Palma is beautiful but driving into town on the wrong side of the road was scary. It was also the first time on an airplane for two of us so all in all an adventurous day.

We are staying in an apartment under Capt. Phil’s house here to views over the harbour are mind blowing and unreal. There are so many super yachts all in sight and it is amazing.

After a really nice lunch that Aunty Anne made and a briefing from Captain Phil we went to STP shipyard to meet the yacht “Mirage” who had just pulled in for an unscheduled overnight stop on their way to Ibiza due to bad weather. This gave us a chance to meet Captain Colin Richardson and also the famous Lutho. The owner of “Mirage” is the one who has sponsored two of our flights to get here in Palma. We helped the crew for a couple of hours to wash the boat and then they actually paid us!

This has now become our first paid job in life. We were also given a tour of the 54 meter motor yacht which was built in Holland and has 20 crew on board. The tour and visit was absolutely amazing and we did not imagine that this existed.

We returned home for a chicken dinner which Phil had made and got to taste his homemade hot sauce and got to eat Spanish rice. After dinner we went with Phil to a small local supermarket to buy a few extra supplies and then off to bed.

As per my previous posting Marine Inspirations  are bringing over four maritime students from Cape Town to Mallorca to show and educate them about the super yacht industry. They will arrive on 22nd September and fly back to SA on 2nd October to finish their studies. For some of them this will be the first time in an airport, let alone an aeroplane!

This is the list of people and companies who have shown their generosity and passion for helping others who are less fortunate.

The items in red are still available to sponsor so there is still an opportunity. This list will be updated and posted here and on other websites and social media on a weekly basis until the youngsters leave. We will also be posting a daily blog while they are in Palma.

Any company or yacht willing to have us visit would be most welcome.

Please contact us – details below.

If you have had a successful career on Super Yachts why not think about giving something back and helping aspiring seafarers from disadvantaged backgrounds who would otherwise not have an opportunity like we have had.

Marine Inspirations was started by myself and Anthony Just back in 2014 to mentor and help youngsters who want a career at sea. Before Covid we brought over more than 40 young lads and lasses to Palma for 2-week visits, which were very successful and proved to be life changing for some of them.

What’s Happening? We will again be bringing over four maritime students who are currently at Lawhill Maritime Centre in Cape Town, to Mallorca to show them the super yacht industry. They will arrive on 25th September and fly back to SA on 6th October to finish their studies. For some of them this will be the first time in an airport, let alone an aeroplane!

Sponsors: To make this educational journey possible, we are seeking generous people who can support specific expenses. In return they will be recognized on various platforms for their contribution, including our website (www.MarineInspirations.org), social media, and  on SuperYachtCaptains.com. Previously we have had good newspaper and magazine coverage and we expect the same to happen again but if you prefer it can also be anonymous. We have already had good response from yachting companies in Mallorca.

The Sponsorship Process: We have made a list of expenses and now need people willing to sponsor specific items on this list. Each sponsor will then have their name put alongside the item they select and the list will be published on Marine Inspirations website (https://marineinspirations.org/), social media, and of course here on the Super Yacht Captains website.

Options range from small contributions, such as a 100 Euros for a group lunch outing, to larger ones, like covering the cost of a round trip airfare (approximately 1,000 Euros or use your air miles!). By associating your name with the item that you sponsor, a contributor can demonstrate their care for those less fortunate and show their dedication to nurturing young maritime talents.
Expenses for Sponsorship:
1.Air Tickets (Four students): Each +/- €1,000 – Round trip which you can book through your own travel agent or even use your airmiles!
2. Boat Charter (40 feet, 10 days): €??? (Looking for a donated boat or reasonably-priced charter — suggestions?)
3. Chartered Boat Dockage Fees (10 days): €? – hopefully get discounted price
4. Various Transport Costs/Fuel in Palma: €100
5. Food on Board Yacht (Breakfast, Coffee, Snacks, Fruit, etc.): €200
6. Dinners on board (Takeaways or whatever) (6 x €50): €300
7. Lunch Outings (6 times, each €100): (MI will cover any extra costs if necessary)
8. Travel Insurance: – € 85 euros per person….
9. Spending Money (€50 each): – €200 (Can be sponsored individually) These will private and not be broadcast on the websites and social media.
